NYU Langone Health invited our firm to work with their architectural planning team to incorporate specialty interior design, interactive exhibits, and other experiences specifically for children and families within a new 60,000 square foot comprehensive state-of-the-art pediatric care facility. The Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital occupies portions of five floors in the Kimmel Pavilion, a 21-story tower at the medical center’s main campus in mid-town Manhattan.
The scope of work involved the integration of specialty interior design enhancements within the dedicated Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital lobby, the Peri-Operative Unit reception/waiting area and playroom, the dedicated Family Center, and an outdoor terrace. Using the theme of “New York is a Wonderland”, SKOLNICK incorporated large iconic sculpture elements, artwork, interactive experiences, and other references to New York City throughout the facility.
Enhancements
The Ground Floor entrance lobby starts the visitor path in New York Harbor with an oversized LEGO Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge-themed elevator bank. And in the 4th floor Peri-Op Unit reception area, a Central Park theme with earthy wood tones features colorful murals with birds and animals found in the park.
The 7th floor represents the hustle and bustle of ‘Midtown’. Emerging from the Grand Central Terminal elevator bank with its interactive model train dioramas, visitors are greeted by a reception desk that resembles Rockefeller Center’s famous skating rink. In the multipurpose room, a Radio City Music Hall marquee welcomes kids to performances and movie nights.
The adjacent outdoor terrace features custom seating, sculpture, and interactive stations providing varied views of the Empire State Building. Throughout, meticulous detailing, material specifications, and FF&E selections were scrutinized and selected to fulfill stringent safety, health code, and infection control requirements.
