“STORIES OF SERVICE AND RECOVERY”

SKOLNICK was honored to be the Exhibition and Graphic Design partner for the 9/11 Tribute Museum. Through focused collaboration with Museum staff, survivors, first responders, and other stakeholders, we designed an exhibition that reflected the Museum’s belief that by understanding the horrific events of that day, visitors can understand the importance of service and realize the contributions they can make to their communities. These overall themes of tragedy to hope and witness/victim to protagonist/activist were embodied in the physical design through transitional phenomena including darkness to light, jagged to smooth, chaos to calm, monumental to intimate, and dense to open.

SEEDS OF SERVICE
The exhibits include an overview of the events of 9/11, the response, recovery, and global outreach. They conclude with “Seeds of Service” – an interactive experience inspired by the concept of the ripple effect that a small seed can generate. Within this final space, visitors are encouraged to reflect and make a public commitment to perform acts of charitable service.
FIRST-PERSON ACCOUNTS
The experience mixes oral history videos, immersive media, environmental graphics, key artifacts, and live storytelling to share first-person accounts of those who witnessed the attacks, responded to the emergency, and were directly impacted by its horror and loss of loved ones. Through these authentic and inspirational stories, visitors gain a heightened understanding of and appreciation for public service and a new awareness of our collective responsibility in the aftermath of any disaster.
