The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) engaged SKOLNICK to provide Interpretive Planning, Interior Design, and Graphic Design Services for the visioning, development, and implementation of a renovation of the Ezra Abraham To Life Foundation Activity Room, located in the Lerner’s Children’s Pavilion.

HELPING PATIENTS, FAMILIES, AND STAFF
The Activity Room provides a space to motivate patients to come out of their rooms, help reduce the negative impact of a hospital stay, and encourage rehabilitation goals. The calm and serene environment was specially designed to cater to the targeted audience of teenage pediatric patients while also addressing the needs of their families and HSS staff who use the space on a daily basis.
A SPACE FOR HEALING
Since its opening, staff have noticed that patients are eager to leave their hospital rooms to visit the new space and attend therapy sessions. Once inside, the children and teens also engage in activities for longer periods of time. This often leads to increased socialization between families, providing them with opportunities to lend support to each other. Additionally, the room’s seamless design and organization makes it easier for HSS staff to utilize the space, which in turn helps them provide the best care for their patients.
“The new room goes beyond being merely accessible and is completely barrier-free. Thanks to this design, staff can provide the care that they need to without having to transfer the patient back to their room. The medical team is also able to meet with patients and families in the room, allowing for a more comfortable and less stressful environment for conversations.
