The East Hampton Library’s Young Adult Room expansion provides an enhanced space tailored for the library’s teen patrons. Following our firm’s design of the Children’s Reading Room in 2014 and the Young Adult Room in 2016, SKOLNICK was asked to further update the YA space to meet growing demand. To accommodate the increasing number of young patrons, the studio transformed an adjoining room into a dynamic, welcoming environment for reading and study.

DESIGN CONCEPT
The design builds on the nature-inspired aesthetic of the original room, incorporating a sophisticated combination of wood and neutral tones. Key features such as curved millwork soffits, ceiling cutouts, and a suspended lighted sculptural element create a fluid connection between the existing Young Adult reading room and the new space, while mitigating any negative effects of being located on a subgrade library level with no windows. Furnishings are designed to be flexible and can be reconfigured as needed for various activities. The wall system allows for changing displays of student artwork. A carpeted pathway further emphasizes this seamless transition between rooms, visually linking the two areas.
AMENITIES AND FEATURES
The expanded room provides various amenities to support teen engagement and study. A smart board enables video presentations and collaborative work on school projects, while display walls showcase student artwork. Ample book storage, numerous charging stations for phones and laptops, and flexible seating arrangements cater to both individual study and group activities. The room’s design maintains a balance between sophistication and playfulness, creating a space that is both functional and appealing to the library’s youth audience.
