ALABAMA GOSPEL MUSIC CULTURAL ARTS CENTER

Birmingham, AL

SKOLNICK, in association with Hoskins Architecture of Birmingham, collaborated with The Alabama Gospel Music Cultural Arts Center (AGMCAC) to establish an overall vision, concept design, and preliminary plan for this new center. Housed in the renovated McCoy United Methodist Church complex, this new cultural institution aims to preserve, promote, and present the rich Gospel heritage of Alabama, the region, and beyond, providing diverse visitors with bonds that link their own experience to the history of Gospel Music.

DYNAMIC COMMUNITY RESOURCE

Located at the convergence of three historic Birmingham neighborhoods – College Hills, Bush Hills, and Graymont – the Center will be a resource for the local community. Its dynamic offering of opportunities for learning, research, performance, and practice will also extend beyond Birmingham, becoming a national resource.

ESTABLISHING THE PROJECT VISION

As part of the Interpretive Master Planning process, SKONLICK facilitated workshops with key members of the AGMCAC, Board members, and expert advisors. The information and ideas gleaned from these collaborative sessions informed the overall mission/vision statement for the project; clarified the Center’s goals, target audiences, and core messages; and helped to solidify the architectural program requirements and the intended look and feel of the physical design of various spaces for exhibition and performance.
