A COMMUNITY-CENTERED DESIGN
The core concept driving the architectural design of CMI’s headquarters is community. Recognizing that healing environments should be as warm and welcoming as they are functional, SKOLNICK designed the space to mirror the familiar and dynamic structure of an urban neighborhood. The layout is organized around a grid of boulevards, streets, and parks—metaphors for movement and connection within the building.
Waiting areas and breakout spaces, named after iconic New York City neighborhoods, such as Chelsea and Tribeca, are located at the building perimeter, creating light-filled moments of respite and familiarity for patients and families.

THE HEALING POWER OF ART
A distinguishing feature of the new headquarters is its commitment to incorporating art as a vital component of the healing process. A small group of individuals with deep ties to the art world collaborated to develop a comprehensive art program, ensuring that the space would be both visually inspiring and emotionally soothing. The permanent collection includes works by renowned artists such as Alice Aycock, Willie Cole, Sally Gall, Sam Gilliam, April Gornik, Eliot Greenwald, Bryan Hunt, KAWS, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, Michal Rovner, Michelle Samour, Kenny Scharf, Michelle Simonetti, Vaughn Spann, Pat Steir, Adam Sultan, and Dustin Yellin, among many others. These pieces, located throughout the headquarters, enrich the healing experience for thousands of children, families, and professionals who pass through its doors.
