“WORTH ITS WEIGHT: GOLD IN AMERICA”

Museum of American Finance, New York, NY

For over 30 years, the Museum of American Finance (MOAF), an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, has been the nation’s only public museum dedicated to preserving, exhibiting, and teaching about American financial practice, entrepreneurship, and history. Several years ago, MOAF retained SKOLNICK to design a concept for their new traveling exhibit “Worth Its Weight: Gold in America” and to create fundraising materials to garner support for its creation.

THE ROLE OF GOLD IN AMERICAN HISTORY

Exhibit areas explore the history of gold in the United States revealing the magnitude of its influence over America’s economic, social, and cultural history. Interactives include a touch table where visitors can “pan for gold”, a trivia game with questions inspired by the content of the exhibit, and even an opportunity for visitors to touch a real gold bar and use a lever to try and lift it to feel its weight. A glittering, theatrical sculptural element is at the heart of the exhibit.

PROMOTING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

By showcasing financial history and practices, this exhibit aims to promote a deeper understanding of risk and reward, helping people to become more financially aware.
